Terms of Service
Last updated 7 October 2026
The short version. Slate is $6.99 a month and renews monthly until you cancel. Cancel any time at slateforcanvas.com/manage and you keep access until the end of the month you paid for. Payments aren't refunded, except billing mistakes.
Slate is a helper, not your official record. It can miss or misread a deadline, so Canvas and your professor are always the final word.
1. Who we are
Slate is a Chrome extension and website (slateforcanvas.com) made and run by Roxton Barry in Las Vegas, Nevada ("Slate", "we", "us"). Questions about anything here: roxtonb@smu.edu.
Slate is independent. It is not made, endorsed or supported by Instructure (the company behind Canvas), Simple Syllabus, Google, or any school.
2. Agreeing to these terms
By installing Slate, buying an access code, or using the website, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Slate. You need to be at least 13 to use Slate, and if you're under 18 you need a parent or guardian's permission to buy a subscription.
3. What Slate does
Slate reads your own Canvas account through the login you already have, then shows your assignments, finds deadlines written in your course documents, estimates how long work will take, and plans your time. It is read-only: it never submits, edits, deletes or posts anything in Canvas.
Some features use AI to read syllabi and course pages. Every deadline Slate pulls from a document shows the sentence it came from, so you can check it.
4. Slate can be wrong, so double-check what matters
Slate does its best, but it can miss a deadline, show the wrong date, or mislabel something, especially when a professor changes a document, posts a deadline somewhere Slate can't read, or writes it in an unusual way. Time estimates and study plans are guesses, not promises. Canvas, your syllabus and your professor are always the official source. You're responsible for your own deadlines and grades. Please don't rely on Slate alone for anything important.
5. Subscriptions and billing
Installing Slate is free. Syncing your Canvas needs an access code from a paid subscription. The subscription is $6.99 per month, billed automatically each month on the day you signed up, until you cancel. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see your full card number.
Discount codes (like a club or event code) apply only as described when you use them, can have limits on how many people can use them, and can't be exchanged for cash.
If we ever change the price, we'll email you at least 30 days before your next charge at the new price, and you can cancel before then.
6. Canceling
Cancel any time, in a few clicks, at slateforcanvas.com/manage (enter the email you used at checkout and Stripe sends you a sign-in link). You can also email roxtonb@smu.edu and we'll cancel it for you. When you cancel, you won't be charged again, and Slate keeps working until the end of the period you already paid for.
7. Refund policy
Subscription payments are not refundable, including for partly used months, except where the law requires a refund. Canceling stops future charges; it doesn't refund the current month.
Billing mistakes are always fixed: if you were charged twice, charged after you canceled, or charged an amount you didn't agree to, email roxtonb@smu.edu within 60 days and we'll refund the mistaken charge.
8. Your access code
Your code is for you. It links to the first Canvas account that uses it, so it won't work for someone else. Please don't share, sell or publish it. We can turn off a code that's being shared or abused.
9. Using Slate fairly
Don't use Slate to break your school's rules or the law, try to get into anyone else's account or data, overload or attack the Slate server, or copy and resell Slate. Using Slate also means following your school's Canvas rules.
10. Changes and availability
We keep improving Slate, so features change over time. We try to keep it running, but it may sometimes be unavailable (for example, if Canvas, Chrome or our server has a problem). If we ever shut Slate down for good, we'll stop charging and tell you by email.
11. No warranty
Slate is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we don't promise that it will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that it will find every deadline or show every date correctly.
12. Limit on our liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, including missed deadlines, late penalties, lower grades, or lost data, and our total liability for any claim about Slate is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
13. Ending your use
You can stop using Slate any time by canceling and uninstalling it. We can suspend or end access if you break these terms; if we end it without a good reason, we'll refund the unused part of your current month.
14. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll update the date at the top and, for big changes, email subscribers before they take effect. Using Slate after that means you accept the new terms.
15. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Nevada, USA. If there's ever a problem, please email us first; most things can be sorted out quickly.
